Hi and welcome to a video tutorial that is going to walk you through how to locate your species taxonomic information for your bio 104 Library lab we're going to begin on the Bio 104 course guide which you can find through the library website and head down to the taxonomic information box and open up the webpage catalog of life.
00:20 |
From here we are going to search for the scientific name of our species and of the purpose of this video we're going to be using Bobcat which would be Lynx Rufus when we are selecting the scientific name we want to make sure we're selecting the exact scientific name and not one that has Lynx Rufus but has more added on top of it because then we'll be sure we'll be getting the exact species that we want.
00:44 |
From the Lynx Rufus page we are going to want to head down to the classification and that is where you can locate your taxonomic information including family genus kingdom and species and from there you can just pop that right into your library lab assignment thanks for watching this video tutorial and please feel free to reach out to the library if you have any questions about finding this information or other information.

Hi and welcome to this video tutorial where we are going to walk through how to find background information for your species for the bio104 library lab. Just like with any research to the BIO104 lab we're going to begin on the BIO 104 course guide and from here we're going to head down to the background information box right here.
00:22 |
Once we're at this box we are going to look for The Links at the bottom of the page of these are going to very which ones you select depending on what type of species you have if you have for instance a plant, plants database can be really helpful where as if you have an animal animal diversity web can be super helpful.
00:42 |
For the purpose of this video I'm going to walk through Encyclopedia of Life which can be helpful for whatever kind of specie you have.
00:49 |
Encyclopedia of life is a great resource for you and once you get to this page what we're going to do is we are going to search for the scientific name of our species .
00:59 |
Once you type in the top right corner as a scientific name of your species and then go ahead and select the one that comes up that matches from the page that matches the scientific name you're going to find a lot of information displayed right here but we can also scroll down and find information about the food chart and also if we select 61 attributes and depending on what species you are looking for this is going to vary you are going to find a lot more information from here and from here we can scroll down and say we are looking for information about their size we can find information about their body mass here we can find information about their conservation status, their diet, there's a whole bunch of information like habitat as well.
01:45 |
The Encyclopedia of Life can also be helpful in tracking down information regarding plants as well so this page here is for the pine tree and if we go to their 26 attributes you can also find similar information about this. Back on the BIO104 course guide we can also see that there are a variety of different links below the background information box and these can be helpful as finding more information as well just as an example if we head over to animal diversity web and we searched for the bobcat.
02:20 |
And here we can see more information about the Bobcat including things like lifespan Behavior habitat food habits and things like that but as always if you are struggling locating information about your speicies and you would like to reach out and touch base with a librarian we are more than happy to help you out.

Hi and welcome to anotherBIO104 video tutorial where we are going to be talking about how to locate information about your species and their connection with humans.
00:09 |
Like always we are going to be in on the BIO 104 course guide and for this one we are going to head down to the box called Human Connection.
00:17 |
From here we can see that there's a number of links down at the bottom that can be helpful and also some information at the top that will walk you through how to find it .
00:26 |
Using our example of bobcat like in the other videos I'm going to head over to animal diversity.
00:32 |
I'm here I'm going to search for the scientific name of our species and take a look at what that page has to tell me.
00:39 |
From the Bobcat page, I can head down and see if I can find any information about bobcat's connection with humans.
00:49 |
And here I can find some information about the economic importance of bobcats with humans and it'll tell me both the positive and the negative as well as the conservation status.
01:00 |
Plants Databases page can also be super helpful if you're locating information about the human connection as it relates to plants. Just like with animal diversity web, we are going to put in the scientific name of our plant and see what information we can find. From this page we can head over to the characteristics part of the page we can see information relating to our plants and information about if it is toxic to humans and if it is used for Christmas trees and things like that .
01:31 |
If you are still having trouble finding information about your species, one thing you could do is do a search on the library search bar that's at the top of the page With your species scientific name or common name and different aspects of human connection for instance medicinal uses is a good example.
01:52 |
As an example here are some results that talk about medicinal uses of ginseng but as always if you do have any questions or struggle finding the information you are looking for please feel free to reach out to the library as the Librarians are more than happy to help you.

Hi and welcome to another bio 104 video tutorial and in this one we're going to be going over how to locate current research for your species.
00:08 |
Once again we're going to start on the BIO 104 course guide and from here we're going to head down at to the current research box.
00:16 |
The easiest resource type to locate current research is within scholarly scientific peer-reviewed journal articles and those you are going to want to find in a database those databases are linked under the current research box right down at the bottom.
00:30 |
The first one that I would recommend starting with would be scopus. Because scientific articles are tend to be written by experts in the meant for researchers students and Scholars you are going to want to research your topic based on the scientific name not the common name and once again using Bobcat we are going to put in linx Rufus and then another additional term that will help us locate a bit more specific information so for these purposes we are going to use habitat.
00:58 |
Once we have our Search terms added to the boxes we are going to hit search and see what we can find.
01:05 |
Now here we have a 232 articles found but one thing that we're going to want to do is narrow by date because even just looking at the first few they are pretty recent but there might be some older ones in here and because we are looking for current research we want it to be as up-to-date as possible.
01:24 |
For locating information that is up-to-date I wouldn't go any older than 4 years old and hit that arrow button that'll cut down our results and so now we have just 66 results were as before we had over 200 and then from here we can go through our results and find articles that will tell us about current research.
01:43 |
once we have an article that we think is a good fit we can then open it up and look at the abstract this will just be a summary of the article so we don't have to read the full thing before deciding if it's a good fit for us if we do find that it is a good fit under a full text options we can locate those.
02:01 |
If you don't find what you're looking for in the first database we open which in this case was scopus, try a different database because different subjects get covered better in certain databases than others so doesn't mean the information is not out there just might mean you have to play around with the Search terms and the search tools to find what you're looking for.
02:19 |
But again if you do struggle to locate that current research definitely reach out to the library and the Librarians are more than happy to help you out.
