Let’s start by defining assumptions
Assumptions are thoughts or statements taken for granted or believed to be true (Assumption, 2017).
Becoming aware of your assumptions and checking them is the first step to determining if the assumptions are accurate or mistaken.
With development of the skill of checking or challenging your assumptions, you can prevent critical thinking errors and communication errors.

Make an effort to be aware of assumptions and check them.

Next, let’s review the basis for evidence-based practice. There are three aspects that make up evidence-based practice—values, experience, and research evidence (Schmidt & Brown, 2015)

Let’s focus on listing assumptions, and checking or challenging your assumptions related to an evidence-based project. When you do your evidence-based project, checking assumptions is one part you will include!

For the sake of an example, the Evidence-based project is the use of pears to relieve pain.
(Of course this is fictional, but you can take out pears and to relieve pain and think of your topic in this example!)
Let’s write assumptions!

Safe, non medication or non narcotic strategies to relieve pain are important for nurses to know about and use . However, nurses should also be knowledgeable that pears may not work for everyone so the nurse should evaluate for pain assessment.
Word this in an assumption that links your values to the EBP topic
For example
Assumption (related to values)
Nurses should employ safe, non narcotic strategies to relieve pain and evaluate if the intervention is effective or not.

Some patients may rather be in charge. While other patients want the nurses to manage their pain.
Recently I was hospitalized and the nurses kept trying to give me IV morphine. I did not want any morphine. I asked for acetaminophen and used my holistic nursing pain management strategies. I was able to manage my own pain with non narcotic means.

Okay this is a bit comical.
Remember we are using pears as the intervention for an example only!
But think about it—is the intervention you want to use in your EBP going to be available for use?
That is really the point here.
Not once when I worked in ICU did I ever wonder if Morphine or Demerol would be available!
But when you might be using an innovative intervention, the availability or access is something to think about!

Some interventions are quite expensive! How about the intervention for your evidence-based project? What is the cost? Think about human time as well as product price.

These are some examples of assumptions you might consider related to evidence-based projects. Of course there are many more and assumptions that vary tremendously based on the topic of the project! I hope this helps you to start thinking about assumptions for your evidence-based project!
